Eh, movies. Like most, I adhere to a defined personal taste in film, with Spanish cinema being my favorite. However, like most, I like to shake things up every so often with some craptacular stuff. This evening, for example, I watched Year One and thought it was hilarious (even though Netflix predicted I give it a 2.1; in my Netflix's defense, it's usually pretty accurate). And sometimes I watch made-for-Disney-Channel movies. And I enjoy them.
And who isn't a fan of Masterpiece Theatre? Because if you're not, you need to be. Which brings me back to the point of this post. The other evening I couldn't fall asleep, so I took a few minutes to browse my Instant list. Like that stereotypical girl, when I saw a movie related to Jane Austen, I was all over it. The film: Lost in Austen, which (not surprisingly) was made as a British TV miniseries. I enjoyed it, though for those die-hard Austen fans (a category I do not lump myself in--in regards to literature and film--especially since I didn't think Colin Firth made a good Darcy), I recommend to stay away. Why, you ask? Some minor deviations from the plot of Pride and Prejudice: Jane marries Mr. Collins, Mr. Bingley becomes a drunk and ends his friendship with Darcy, Georgiana was the one who attempted to come on to Wickham and lied to her brother about it after she was denied, Wickham is actually a nice guy, Mr. Bingley runs away with Lydia (though he doesn't ruin her), Jane and Mr. Bingley plan to wed after an annulment from her marriage with Collins (and they plan to move to America), and apparently Caroline Bingley is a lesbian. You know, minor changes.
But like all good Pride and Prejudice adaptations, the Mr. Darcy in this one is one yummy dish, though I prefer (prepare for more sacrilege) Matthew Macfadyen's Darcy to any other. But here are some screenshots from when the film's protagonist (a modern Londoner sent back in time--and fiction) convinces Darcy to emerge from the fountain's water (for her entertainment) after he professes his love for her. Because that totally happened in the book.
Yum yum yum.
And while we're on the subject,
Masterpiece Classic is revving up for its new season on January 10th! This Sunday you can catch the final installment of
Cranford (Dame Judy!), which will then be followed by
Return to Cranford and a new adaptation of
Emma. This time of year makes me very happy!
