Saturday

under the boardwalk, down by the sea...

I'd like to share an anecdote: senior year of high school my friends and I spent a lot of our last semester fixating on a film, one that won us over more so with its soft porn scenes than its muddled plot and dialogue. The Dreamers was the first (and probably only) NC-17 movie I saw in theatres, and I felt so naively badass not being carded the two times I went to see it (I was a few months shy of 18 at the time). Yeah, Theo was hot, but, duuuuude, then began my imaginary love affair with Michael Pitt. I would. Hit. That shit. Anytime.
I had no idea, then, that Michael Pitt was in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. When my mom first watched the show's opening credits, she saw his name and asked, "Michael Pitt, is that Brad Pitt's brother?" No, woman, I have only loved this man for the past six years. Plus a billion other dudes, but whatever.

And so continues my love affair with HBO programming! Not only is the history enthralling, it's kind of refreshing being able to "watch" an America ripe with foreign accents; my grandfather immigrated to the US from Ireland around that time, so perhaps that's part of the reason why my favorite character (behind Richard Harrow) is Margaret Schroeder. And the fashions, holyballz, the fashions!
And wouldn't you know, the season finale this Sunday is happening on the anniversary of the repealing of the 18th Amendment. Guess who'll be watching with a beer in one hand and her flask in the other? This girl. God Bless Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and God Bless America!

P.S. Who's been watching the show? Conspiracy theories for the finale? *spoilers* Where'd Margaret go? Will Jimmy throw his baby's mamma out on the street? How will Van Alden cover up Sebso's murder? Who's gonna be murdered? B/c we all know someone's gonna die.

P.P.S. If you're in Philly on Sunday, celebrate Repeal Day at The Franklin, starting at 5 p.m. Go-go-America! Hu-ah! Just sad I can't go b/c I have work on Monday... booooo...

P.P.P.S. I'm finally reading this book, and it's juicy. Oh, so juicy.

  1. So basically, I say we pitch the "Michael Pitt Appreciation Hour" to HBO.

    Starring- Michael Pitt.
    Co-Starring- Michael Pitt's Lips.

It'd be one hour of Michael Pitt reading names out of the phone-book, and staring wistfully off in the distance.

    BAM.

Also, I am only on episode 7 of Boardwalk.....but from what I've seen, I LOVE IT (even though I have to watch most of it with a pillow-at-the-ready to shield my wimpy self from the head-bustin' gangster-gore scenes)

  3. ahhh, his lips, his pillowy lips! I support this pitch, Allison...let's get the petition started!

and those scenes are too much for me, too...I guess I manage b/c I've been watching the episodes while browsing the internet, so I can distract myself...and we just got HBO again, so I've had three marathon nights w/the episodes onDemand...I'm only sad we must soon wait for another season! why does HBO always do this to me!

and, Dee, I feel like I have cheated myself of additional years of MP appreciation! as I never watched Dawson's...this is what I get, I suppose...

  8. ahhh, Lindsay, I wish there was an alternative to getting cable in order to get HBO, b/c I only want the latter...why must everything be so difficult in this world.......

eeeee, why does Michelle Williams get all the hot guys???? sorry, I'm just jealous, Lexie...

I'm trying to figure out where I've seen her before, Siubhan, but I'm too lazy to imdb her...b/c I totally love her, too!

yeah, I believe I felt the same way, Brigitta, and really just needed a decent series to watch...I mean, it's no True Blood HBO, haaaah...but the plot development has been interesting...I think once they cut off into the various cities and develop the Chicago and NY plot, and have them all intertwine, it gets a lot more interesting...

  9. it's a mediocre film, but the scenes where they pay homage to earlier films make it worth watching

  10. Oh my crap.. This is a little late.. but I finally have started watching Boardwalk Empire. I had a hard time finding it bc I dont have TV and it is *really* hard to find on the internet.

It is....So. Good. And, my buddy Eric is usually skeptical and hard to please about tv shows, I showed him episode one and he was all "Please Sir can I have some more?" (Not really).. but he liked it.

Also.. Kelly McDonald was Llewelyn's wife in No Country for Old Men. She's awesome. I didn't realize she was Scottish, it makes me like her more by default. Lol.

  11. yeah, dude! my parents were trying to sell my sister and her husband on it (since they're at home for a few days), but they couldn't get past watching all the nudie scenes with them...I was like, that's why I watch HBO by myself, hellllloooooo!

and I saw that when I was looking at her imdb page! which I totally did not remember...I remember her instead from some shitty movie w/Bill Nighy, where they meet in a cafe and go to the g8 summit together in Iceland...and I didn't realize she was Scottish either...to which I, on the other hand, reacted like, lies! all lies! I thought you were my kin......baaahaha. ha.
