I can die now, I have a piece of Kiki Smith in my apartment.

I dragged Jennifer to the Fabric Workshop and Museum gift shop, after coveting Julia's fabric score from the same shop for the past few months. I thought I had settled on a pillow in the same print, but then I saw something that I had wanted for awhile, something I had wanted real bad: a multiple of Kiki's Owl and Pussycat flip doll, which she created in collaboration with the Museum in 2002. Kiki is, after all, my favorite living artist. So I put out for he/she and now here the hybrid sits before me. I'm naming her Sheila, even though I know/assume either the owl or the cat has to be a male, as it's based on a poem from 1871 about two animals in love. Or maybe Lear was ahead of his time.

And if I had a Tumblr, I would have re-posted this already (via one of my favorite Tumblrs).

sheila is a good name. even for a male cat/owl. beautiful piece.
ReplyDeleteSheila is a good name, but you know I think Oat is way more appropriate. :)
ReplyDeleteFellow Kiki Smith fan here. She was one of my biggest influences when I was brainstorming for my thesis. When her exhibit opened in Houston, I caught a glimpse of her peering down from the second floor- wild hair and all. Okay, I'm starting to ramble- but great buy & I'm so jealous!
ReplyDeleteAHHH, Sheila, I'm glad you agree! : )
ReplyDeletewhat was the other name you came up with...? oh yeah, cowl, hahah...I just can't do Oat, though, b/c I think of Hall & Oates...and you were very correct, as I saw that they are Liberty prints...
yeeeeeah, Chau! and I'm so jealous! the only survey-of-art-history-book artist I've encountered was Judy Chicago when the Dinner Party was being installed in Brooklyn, and she was a biiiiiiitch...what was your thesis on?
i remember seeing those kitties! awesome! that's so great you guys got to go. i was thinking about their fabric again the other day as i have yet to still do anything with what i got! i'm thinking a shirt is in order.
ReplyDeleteugh, that's such a good idea...I wish I could sew, b/c then I'd totally make it into a tank top...jealousssss : )
ReplyDeleteoh i love it too!
